In the early 1900's Sigmond Freud came up with a then-revolutionary concept; that our negative childhood events are root causes of negative adult feelings and behavior. Before then, parents thought they could abuse their children if they wanted to and this would have no effect on the child when an adult.  Freud's theory was a great step in raising global consciousness, and it sowed the seeds for changes in the treatment of children and opportunities for healing adults.  But Freud also came up with another theory, that females envy males for having a penis. Although I have met some women with penis envy, on the whole I find penis envy is not true. Of course in Freud's time, women had a tough life and men had it relatively easy. So it makes sense that women then had penis envy - the male organ was a ticket to social freedom, recognition, respect, and financial stability.

So, do we accept penis envy as a condition to accepting that a bad childhood causes problems in adulthood? Is it necessary to accept the theory that does not seem to work with the theory that does seem to work?

In the same way, psychologists through the following years have taken Freud's theories about childhood and misinterpreted them. They formed a new hypothesis, that all our troubles stem from childhood. Some take it further and say that the more severe the adult issues are, the worse the childhood events were. Some take it even further, saying that these troubles stem from childhood events in the so-called most formative years, between 0-6 years of age.

This implies that anyone who has a severe problem in adulthood has events of serious physical, emotional, or sexual abuse in childhood. And that these must be between 0-6 years of age.

Before I go on to give you examples, let us first define a few things.

  • Most psychologists have suffered a less-than-happy childhood. That is why they become psychologists. So naturally, these concepts fit well into their model of life and that of their peers with whom they have trained.
  • A theory is an unproven concept. Only a theorem is a proven concept. But people confuse the two, speaking of theories as theorems. They are not.
  • The most formative years may well be 0-6 years of age, but "most formative" does not mean "the only formative".
  • Some people show symptoms that may be interpreted as psychological but are actually physical, for example Alzheimer's.
  • It is widely recognized that adults who are subjected to extreme suffering in disasters like Tsunamis or earthquakes, or who are subjected to extreme suffering from torture or rape have to be released from the effects of this experience. This is why counseling is made available to such adult victims of extreme trauma.

So what am I really trying to say? Well, let me show you by example. I have been fortunate to be sent two remarkable exceptions to the majority thinking early on in my EFT tapping career. I will change the details to protect the clients' anonymity.

Christopher was a lovely teenager. He had just been diagnosed with autism, although I did not need his parents to tell me that. Christopher was rocking back and forth, saying how much he fancied his teacher, and flapping his hands. His parents had other ideas. They said that he became increasingly "disturbed" since about 5 years of age, and they thought it was because someone somewhere had sexually abused him. They wanted me to hypnotize Christopher and regress him to that time, to find the event and heal him. I explained that I doubted if that was the issue, but they insisted. So I agreed to hypnotize him. I then proceeded to hypnotize Christopher and got him into a deep trance. I regressed him to 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 years of age, with no such event transpiring. I did probe. And he did cooperate. But no sexual abuse came up.

His parents, not quite convinced yet, were crestfallen. I taught them all EFT and we all did EFT together on accepting and loving Christopher just as he was. I did what I could, and I hope that it helped.

Susan came to see me for release from her depression. In taking her history, she said that she had a bad childhood and that this was why she is depressed. I took several other details, and we then started the EFT. We tapped on various childhood events, bringing each down from about an 8-10 out of 10 to about a 3-4 out of 10. Each childhood event stayed stuck at a 3-4 and did not budge, not even with further sessions. When I asked what this event would remind Susan of, she would present me with an earlier event to tap on. And we would bring this event down to a 3-4 and it would not budge further. We did this for several sessions, all the time looking deeper and deeper into Susan's childhood, all to no avail. Everything got stuck at a 3-4. Susan was still just as depressed.

In-between sessions, I would pour over Susan's notes, looking for clues. I noticed that all the childhood events we worked on were pretty average and not the stuff of a particularly bad childhood. I read and re-read the notes, and finally, after several sessions, I noticed something. I noticed in the history I took that she was a Financial Director of a firm for many years, having studied accountancy. But now, she was studying part-time to be an alternative nutritionist and not working. She had said at our initial consultation that it was because this is what she really wanted. It just did not sound right. Why would an accomplished accountant be completely out of work, studying part-time? So, next time I saw her, I asked her what happened to cause the shift. "Oh, that was because of the accident", she replied. "What accident?" I said. Then came forth a whole series of terrible things that had happened to Susan. She said that a new Chairman had been appointed, who undermined Susan at every opportunity because of her gender. She was already under a great deal of stress when the last straw happened. Susan had an accident at work requiring extensive hospitalization. Whilst Susan was very ill in hospital, the Chairman of the company continued to harass and intimidate her, threatening her with the sack for being off sick. When Susan came back to work, she was put on reduced pay and demoted to the position of an office clerk in the Finance department. She left and was suing the company.

Wow, what a story! So, I asked her for one event we can tap on to do with this and we tapped on it. It went from a 10 eventually to zero in about half a session. We then could see a parallel between the childhood events she chose for tapping and what happened at the firm. The reason why those childhood events would not totally collapse is that they reminded her of those terrible events in adulthood!

What was even more relevant is that Susan then said that she had been depressed ever since the accident. So the root causes of Susan's depression were mainly in adulthood. Susan went on to finally get better.

These are just two examples. I hope they have given you food for thought. Unless the person had the most terrible trauma in childhood, I often now tap on one recent and one childhood, teens, or early adulthood (if applicable) event in each session. I have found this to be a formula that works well.
