Tami and the Fear of the Interview

A gentle first session

By Suzanne Zacharia

Tami (not her real name) came to see me for stage fright and interview anxiety. She is a music student working part-time as a waitress, and whenever she played in front of her teacher or a group, she trembled like a leaf. She needed to release this fear in order to move on with her studies and her work.

I explained to Tami about EFT. She seemed extremely nervous when I explained how our fears are stored in the body rather than a place in the brain. I tried to explain about energy and how by changing the body's energy, we feel better. However, she was way too nervous to sit through the explanation. So I explained the absolute minimum and left the rest of the explanation for the treatment.

I started the treatment by having Tami lie down whilst I tapped on her. I did so by sitting behind her head and tapping on the Top of the Head and all the Eye points, tapping all the way in a smooth motion from one point to the next. This choice of points is because it is easy for me to do without compromising my posture, it is very nice and unobtrusive for the client, and it is sufficient points for treatment.

In the first session, I chose to start with explaining EFT as I tapped on Tami. Once that was finished, she was so relaxed, she was almost asleep. We then went on to treat the first event that came to her mind. That was the interview that she had with her new boss two months ago. I tapped on Tami, guessing most aspects and using the information I managed to get from her during history-taking. I said statements such as the following.
"Even though you were trembling, ..."
"Even though there was this fear of being judged, ..."
"Even though he was in a position of authority, ..." (I also introduced the image of the boss on the toilet with his trousers around his ankles, and Tami giggled. I said as I kept tapping "he is just a human being, just like you and me. He goes to the toilet and looks very undignified too, just like everyone else".

The intensity of fear about the interview went from an 8 out of 10 to a 4 to a 2, and then less, but by then Tami had released so much fear, she was too tired to talk. I guess it was zero or thereabouts.

I finished by giving Tami the Quick Anxiety Stopper to do without wording before performances, and she left looking very relaxed. I look forward to our next session. Thank you Tami for letting me tell your story, so that others can feel the strength to come forward for healing.
